To support IT consumerization, Intel IT is shifting focus to deliver services to any device. By taking advantage of a combination of technologies and trends—such as ubiquitous internet connectivity, virtualization, and cloud computing—we have an opportunity to redefine the way we provide services to meet user requirements. Intel calls the vision of seamless, consistent experiences across devices the Compute Continuum, and Intel IT has established a program to help deliver these capabilities.

As part of a multiyear strategy, Intel IT began migrating mission-critical computing environments from proprietary systems to Intel® architecture. These environments included silicon design, manufacturing, and global enterprise resource planning (ERP). As a result of a meticulous planning process and following best practices, the migrations turned out to be less difficult—and the benefits greater—than originally anticipated.

To create the infrastructure for a private enterprise cloud, Intel IT has a goal of virtualizing up to 75 percent of our office and enterprise computing environments. To achieve this, Intel IT will need to virtualize mission-critical applications, which is challenging due to rigorous performance, availability, and other requirements. Based on the outcome of this POC, Intel IT plans to start virtualizing the first of many mission-critical applications in 2011 as part of our cloud environment.
